My name is Hal Satterthwaite and I am a fully accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) therapist with extensive experience of delivering care and treatment for adult clients from all ages and backgrounds and for a wide range of conditions . I have a warm and pragmatic approach and provide effective and helpful therapy in a safe and confidential environment. I work from a comfortable private practice in the City of London less than 5 minutes from Bank Station in Central London.
I provide therapy for both individuals and couples with the aim of enabling you to enhance your life and to live it more fully. I will work in partnership with you, at your own pace, to help you modify unhelpful cognitive patterns and establish behavioural changes which will help you achieve your objectives for therapy.
Therapy offers space to explore whatever may be causing difficulty or holding you back.
Clients often come for support with anxiety, low mood, work stress, self-esteem, or relationships, but you don’t need to have a specific diagnosis — the focus is on understanding what’s happening and finding ways to move forward.
My core approach is CBT but I am trained in and borrow from other approaches as needed, always tailored to each person’s needs and goals. Sessions are typically weekly and last 50 minutes.
I am fully trained and experienced in Cognitive Behavioural Couples Therapy (CBCT) and work with couples experiencing communication difficulties, conflict, or relationship distress. Couples therapy provides a structured space to explore the interactional patterns that keep you stuck and to develop more constructive ways of relating — particularly around communication, intimacy, trust, or major life transitions.
I also work with individuals seeking focused support with relationship issues.
Online sessions offer flexibility for people who travel frequently, have demanding schedules, or prefer the comfort of home. Sessions take place via secure video platform and follow the same structure as in-person work. If you live outside London, online therapy can be an accessible way for us to work together.
Face-to-face sessions are held at my office in Token House near Bank Station; a calm and confidential setting. Many clients appreciate the quiet focus that comes from being in the room together. If you’re not sure whether in-person or online would suit you best, we can talk through the options in an initial consultation.
Adapted CBT offers a practical, structured approach for people with ADHD or autism who find that standard therapy models don’t always fit their needs. The focus is on understanding how neurodiversity shapes thoughts, emotions, and daily routines, and on developing tools that genuinely work for you in everyday life.
Sessions move at a pace that feels manageable and use concrete, collaborative strategies. This might include help with planning and organisation, managing overwhelm, improving emotional regulation, or navigating social or communication differences. The aim is not to change who you are, but to support you in building confidence, reducing stress, and creating systems and habits that make life feel more workable. Sessions can take place online or face-to-face.
The ADHD Couples Reset Programme is a focused approach for couples where ADHD is impacting communication, routines, or emotional connection. ADHD traits such as forgetfulness, overwhelm, or emotional intensity can create repeating patterns that feel difficult to shift.
The programme helps both partners understand these patterns and develop more workable, compassionate ways of relating. It combines psychoeducation with practical communication tools, adapted to each couple’s needs. Sessions can be online or face-to-face.
The ASD Couples Reset Programme is a focused approach for couples where autism is affecting communication, emotional understanding, or day-to-day connection. Differences in processing, sensory sensitivity, or social communication styles can lead to misunderstandings and recurring tension that feel difficult to resolve.
The programme helps both partners better understand these differences and develop clearer, more supportive ways of relating. It combines psychoeducation with practical communication strategies, adapted to each couple’s needs. Sessions can be online or face-to-face.

As a fully qualified and BABCP certified therapist, I am experienced in helping clients who have difficulties with:
Most clients come for therapy seeking to achieve changes in how they feel. We cannot directly modify distressing emotions. We can however identify patterns of thought and behaviour which are maintaining the distress and then plan a program of cognitive and behavioural change which will help improve mood and reduce anxiety.

CBT is a type of talking therapy that focuses on how your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect your feelings and behaviour, and helps you develop more helpful ways of thinking, behaving and helps you to cope with and address life problems. It combines cognitive therapy (working on the way you think) and behaviour therapy (examining and changing the things you do) and is a highly effective and evidence based approach to achieving lasting improvements in a wide range of common psychological and emotional difficulties.
What will happen during the first session?
You may be anxious when you attend for your first session and this is entirely natural and understandable. During the initial meeting a detailed assessment will be made of the problems you want to work on. At the end of our first appointment it should be clear as to the best way forward. If it seems that I can help then we can discuss whether you would like to proceed with treatment and agree a series of objectives for your therapy.

If you’d like to find out more or discuss how therapy might help, please get in touch using the confidential and secure contact form.
Once you make contact, I will call you as soon as possible for a brief (10-15 min) chat, during which I will check out with you what you would like to work on and to introduce myself and arrange our first appointment.
Your first session is an opportunity for us to talk about what has brought you to therapy, what you would like to change, and whether CBT is the right approach for you. We will begin developing a shared understanding of the problem and agree on a plan for your sessions.
CBT is a goal-focused, time-limited therapy. Most people attend between 6 and 20 sessions, depending on the nature of their difficulties. We will review progress regularly to ensure the therapy remains helpful and aligned with your goals. If funds are limited we can agree a session limit when we start and then tailor our work together accordingly.
CBT is most effective when what we discuss in sessions is put into practice in your day-to-day life. I may suggest small tasks, reflections, reading or exercises between sessions to help you consolidate what we’re working on. These are always collaborative, manageable, and tailored to your goals. We will work at your pace.
Yes. I offer therapy both online and in person, giving you flexibility to choose the format that works best for you. Online CBT is just as effective as face-to-face therapy and can be more convenient for many clients.
Research has consistently shown that CBT is one of the most effective treatments for anxiety disorders, depression and stress-related difficulties. It is a structured and active approach that focuses on identifying and changing patterns of thinking and behaviour that may be keeping problems going.
CBT may not be the right approach if you are recently bereaved or looking primarily for open-ended, exploratory support. It is most helpful for people who want to work towards specific changes and are willing to engage in a focused, practical process.
If you are unsure whether CBT suits your needs, we can discuss this in an initial session and consider what approach would be most appropriate. I will always be honest about whether I believe CBT is likely to help, and if I think another form of therapy would suit you better, I will say so.
Most clients attend weekly sessions, as this provides consistency and momentum. However, we can discuss alternative arrangements if needed.
Yes. Therapy is fully confidential, with the exception of rare situations where there is an active risk of harm to yourself or someone else. I will explain these boundaries clearly in your first session.
Yes. I am trained in Cognitive Behavioural Couples Therapy (CBCT) and work with couples experiencing communication problems, conflict, or relationship distress. I also work with individuals who would like support with relationship issues.
I have many years of experience supporting clients with drug addiction, alcohol-related difficulties and a range of different compulsions and addictions, including gambling, pornography and sex. If you have an addiction, CBT can be very effective in helping you understand triggers, develop coping strategies, and make meaningful change.
